I used to always forget to buy washing tablets during my weekly grocery runs, but since switching to Smol's subscription service, that's no longer a worry. With Smol, I avoid the inconvenience of running out of detergent, and managing my subscription is a breeze with the option to pause or cancel online.

Smol Laundry Capsules Honest Review 2024

It's often the case that sustainable products come with a higher price tag, but not with Smol. A box of 24 tablets costs just £5.80, making it both eco-friendly and budget-friendly. And if you're unsure, Smol is currently offering a free trial, giving you nine washes at no cost, so you can experience the effectiveness of their capsules firsthand.

One of the joys of a good laundry day is the delightful scent of freshly washed clothes, and Smol delivers on that front. I receive compliments on my fresh scent even without perfume, and my sheets retain their daisy-fresh fragrance for days. It's surprising how Smol has made doing laundry a pleasure—I never imagined I'd be so eager to tackle it. Looks like I've officially entered adulthood!

Smol Laundry Capsules Honest Review 2024

I've been so impressed with Smol that I've now added their fabric softener to my subscription, another aspect of adulting that brings me immense satisfaction. Just like their washing tablets, the fabric softener embodies their philosophy of cruelty-free formulas with fewer harmful chemicals. And in line with my commitment to sustainability, the bottles are crafted entirely from post-consumer waste and can be returned for a refill or recycled. Not only is it an eco-conscious choice, but the fabric softener has also breathed new life into my once-scratchy jumpers that were relegated to the back of my wardrobe.

Embracing sustainable choices is a gradual process for me, but it's an essential part of my journey toward becoming a more conscientious consumer. Discovering innovative and mindful companies like Smol is always a delight, especially when they manage to turn mundane chores like laundry into something exciting, while also contributing positively to the planet. Inspired by the quality of their laundry capsules, I've decided to test out their dishwasher tablets using the free trial—I'll be sure to share my feedback.

How it Works:

Initially, Smol offered only two products: laundry capsules and dishwasher tablets. However, their product range has since expanded significantly.

Smol's product lineup now includes:

  • Laundry Capsules
  • Dishwasher Tablets
  • Fabric Conditioner
  • Surface Sprays
  • Washing Up Liquid
You can avail of a free trial of the laundry capsules, dishwasher tablets, and multi-purpose sprays. Additionally, you can purchase a pack of 24 capsules for just £5.90 if you wish to give them a try!

As a marketer myself, I must commend their seamless sign-up process. Upon visiting their website, you're greeted with a clean, straightforward homepage. The messaging is crystal clear, making navigation a breeze.

Once you opt for the free trial, you'll be asked a few simple questions to determine your capsule needs.

  • Which type of detergent do you prefer?
  • How many capsules per wash do you require?
  • How frequently do you run your washing machine?
By answering these questions, Smol calculates your capsule requirements. Based on my responses, I'd need a new pack priced at £4.50 every 21 days, although my daughter doesn't reside with me full-time.

For those with kids at home, you might find yourself needing a new pack every 21 minutes! 😂

What's convenient is that you can easily log in to your account to adjust or postpone your deliveries, ensuring you never receive more than you need.

I quickly discovered I didn't require as many tablets as initially stated because, well, I tend to do three loads of laundry in one day and then neglect it for another two weeks, hoping the laundry fairy will take care of it all.

It hasn't happened yet, but I remain optimistic.

For those supremely organized individuals, you also have the option to order additional capsules sooner.

If you're one of those people, I envy your organizational skills. Teach me your ways!

Are They Environmentally Friendly?

As consumers, it's crucial to consider the environmental impact of our choices when selecting products.

Honestly, the primary reason I switched to Smol was their commitment to 100% plastic-free and recyclable packaging.

The packaging is well-designed, incorporating a child-lock mechanism to prevent access by young children.

I must admit, I felt a bit like Indiana Jones when I cracked open the first box.

For those who appreciate the finer details:

  • The boxes are all Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) approved, sourced from responsibly managed forests.
  • The packs are printed using vegetable-based inks.
  • The products are Leaping Bunny approved (cruelty-free).
Once your account is set up, you're greeted with a message like this upon logging in, which I find fantastic.

Price Comparison: Can Smol Save You Money?

Let's get down to brass tacks...

A standard pack of Smol laundry capsules priced at £4.50 contains 24 washes when using one capsule per wash—equivalent to just £0.19 per wash.

I checked Tesco's prices for the sake of comparison, though other supermarket prices should be similar. Some may be higher, some lower.

For instance, a 25-pack of Bold All In 1 Washing Pods costs £5.00, equating to £0.20 per wash, the same as 25 Fairy Non-Biological Washing Pods.

Tesco currently offers bulk packs of Fairy Washing Pods containing 57 washes for £9.79, at just £0.17 per wash.

Alternatively, Tesco's own brand Non-Biological Laundry Capsules are priced at £2.75 for 20 washes, potentially costing as little as £0.14 per wash.

If you're keen on minimizing costs, your best bet is either opting for an own-brand product or buying in bulk to benefit from economies of scale.

However, Smol emerges as the preferred choice if you:
  • Prefer not to store excessive laundry capsules.
  • Desire a thorough clean for your clothes.
  • Seek an ethical, recyclable product.

Do They Work?

As a father of a four-year-old, it's safe to say my daughter's clothes often need a good wash. Food stains, dirt, paint, glitter... you name it, Evie attracts it (as she should—part of being a kid!).

Given my daughter's sensitive skin, I was initially concerned about potential reactions to the switch, but thankfully, there were none.

The capsules effectively tackle the majority of stains without the need for additional stain remover products, although stubborn stains like felt pen may pose a challenge.

Everything comes out of the wash smelling fresh, without being overpowering. Now that I've been using Smol for a while, I usually add a drop of fabric conditioner for extra freshness.

Once I'd been using the laundry capsules for some time, I began using the dishwasher tablets as well. They come in similar packaging with a child-lock mechanism, which is reassuring.

But let's get to the point you're interested in...

These tablets, like their laundry capsule counterparts, are cruelty-free and eco-friendly, providing a solid clean overall.

Having used these tablets for about three months less than the laundry capsules, I've found the monthly delivery amount to be almost always spot on. However, I'd recommend keeping a spare set of dishwasher tablets in the cupboard for emergencies—it's a hassle to run out.

...I'm not one for wearing marigolds.

I have yet to test Smol's other products, but I'll update as soon as I've had the chance to give them a try.

The Verdict:

In my opinion, Smol is onto something significant here. They've developed a user-friendly subscription platform that eliminates the hassle of upselling and allows you to subscribe and manage your orders quickly and easily.

When I signed up, I was concerned about running out and having to keep a backup pack of tablets just in case. Thus far, since signing up, that's only happened once.

The laundry capsules effectively remove nearly all stains, with the exception of those stubborn ones that require industrial-strength stain removers.

While the price is competitive, it's not the cheapest option available. However, for a few extra pennies per wash, you're contributing to the reduction of single-use plastics and supporting a company that is cruelty-free—an investment in a better future.
